CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Despite the excitement of the night, Penelope eventually succumbed to sleep. The next morning, after getting dressed, she rushed to the library. She found Richard sitting in one of the chairs, reading a book and enjoying a cup of coffee.

He lifted it toward her and grinned. “Chives took pity on me, and didn’t ask any questions. Good man.”

They had put the egg in a secure location behind some of the books on one shelf. It wasn’t much, but at least it kept the egg from remaining out in the open for anyone to view. They were still without a maid, something Penelope had oddly bad luck with, so that saved some of the trouble.

“I think you should go in to your office today as though nothing has happened. Obviously, don’t mention the egg to anyone, not even Jane or Lulu, though I know how much you trust them.”

He was right. There was no need to involve more people than necessary. Besides, by the end of the day, the egg would be out of their possession and the federal government’s problem. Still, she walked over to push the books aside and look at it one last time.

“An actual Fabergé,” she said with a smile, picking it up from its stand one final time. “I can see why so many people would be after it.”

“Perhaps that’s why Amethyst or Katie gave it up, maybe they felt they were in over their heads.”

Pen thought about the girl in the red dress from the Peacock Club, throwing a fit as she was dragged out by Tommy. Then, she thought of the girl splashed across the pages of the tabloids.

Both were immature and rebellious, though perhaps good at scheming and planning. She didn’t know much about Tino, but she doubted he was enough to turn this caper of theirs into a failsafe plan for independence.

After breakfast, Penelope had Leonard drive her to the office, as Richard had told her to do.

“Did last night’s adventures lead to any development in the case?” Leonard asked as he drove.

She was glad she hadn’t shown him the egg. It would have embroiled him in all of this, and she had a feeling that wouldn’t be good for him.

“It only created another puzzle. Fortunately, Detective Prescott is handling it. I doubt it’s even really related to my current cases,” she added just for good measure.

The traffic light had just turned, allowing them to proceed when Penelope heard the sounds of a police siren. She didn’t think much of it—police sirens were part and parcel of living in New York City—until the car sped up right next to hers, then deliberately cut them off. Leonard was forced to come to a screeching halt, which nearly had Pen tumbling into the front seat.

“What the hell?” Leonard exclaimed in anger.

Two uniformed policemen exited their car and stormed over to Pen’s door. One abruptly opened it and leaned in to address her.

“Miss Penelope Banks?”

“Yes. What is the meaning of this?”

“I need you to come with me, Miss Banks.
